Let's Talk Alcohol and Pregnancy (FASD) This webinar content is designed for prenatal and MCH professionals

Current prevalence estimates indicate that 1 in 20 American school age children may be impacted by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This disability can manifest as difficulty with attention, learning, self-regulation, social interactions, and skills needed for successful independence. FASD symptoms can overlap with other common behavioral health conditions. Uninformed behavioral health professionals are contributing to the problem of misdiagnoses as they are not including prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) in their differential. Many do not know the best strategies for working with individuals with FASD and this can result in treatment failures and negative mental health consequences for their patients.
This training will describe the impacts of PAE on the brain, identify when that may be a contributing factor to the clinical presentation, and explore effective supports for the individual and their family.  Providers will have a beginning ‘toolbox’ of concrete strategies to use and resources for acquiring more skills.

What Behavioral Health Providers need to know about FASD - 5 segments available

FASD Basics (0.5 hr content)
  • Session description: This session will discuss factors contributing to increasing numbers of FASD, diagnosis overview, and mechanisms by which alcohol can harm fetal development.

How to Screen for Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (0.5 hr content)
  • Session description: This session will examine common scenarios of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), explore the factors that contribute to alcohol use during pregnancy, and provide tips to help a clinician improve their skills in obtaining PAE history information.
Symptoms of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure (0.5 hr content)

  • Session description: This session will identify the primary symptoms individuals impacted by PAE may experience (that are a direct result of the brain changes) and explore the secondary symptoms that these individuals may experience that are a result of poor fit between environmental expectations and the impaired capacity of the impacted brain.
DSM Diagnoses (0.5 hr content)

  • Session description: This session will discuss the common DSM diagnoses given to individuals impacted by prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and explore the symptoms of these diagnoses as potentially being either primary or secondary symptoms of the PAE.
How to Provide Accommodations in Behavioral Health Services (0.5 hr content)
  • Session description: This session will examine clinical interventions for good fit between what the brain can achieve and the expectations of the intervention, explore how to integrate the information from assessments when developing accommodations to meet the brain at its capacity, discuss how to best support the individual and their family, and identify resources for individuals and families.
